Discussion Lists
What are Discussion Lists?
These are emails that send you:
  • A discussion on a specific topic. Discussion lists offer active discussion from subscribers on the list. Popular topics for discussion lists include software development, celebrity updates, stock talk, etc.
  • Feedback from subscribers. Email from members of the list will be emailed to you. The number of emails you will receive depends on the number of posts.
  • Moderated discussions. Before a message is sent, a moderator reviews the message and approves it for submission.
  • Un-moderated discussions. Any message submitted is sent to subscribers.

Why subscribe to Discussion Lists?
These emails can help you:

  • Get many different perspectives on a subject. Discussion lists are open to all. You will hear many different points of views.
  • Learn from others. You will get first hand accounts from people solving problems. Their tips are usually not "in the manual."
  • Form new relationships. Meet people with similar interests.

How do I decide which Discussion Lists are right for me?
The right lists for you depend on:

  • Your interests. Find the email that matches your specific area of interest.
  • The frequency of postings. Choose a list that sends an amount of email that you can manage. It's possible to receive up to 100 emails a day from a popular discussion list. Many list authors help you manage this by bundling postings together into larger emails called digests. These digests include all the daily postings to the discussion list, but are usually only sent two or three times a day.
  • The people posting the messages. Some discussion lists break down into personal fights. You want to find lists that offer intelligent posts, not insults.
