Webroot Selects Mailshell's
LiveFeed to Provide Reputation-Based Security
Webroot® Email Security SaaS to Provide Additional
Protection from Spam, Phishing and Email-Borne Threats
BOULDER, CO - May 7, 2008 - Webroot, a leading
provider of security solutions for the consumer, enterprise
and SMB markets, today announced the integration of Mailshell's
LiveFeed reputation service to provide additional protection
from spam, phishing and other emerging email-borne threats.
The first deployment of Mailshell Engine for Webroot will
be in Webroot® E-mail Security SaaS, but Webroot has also
licensed the technology for use in its other product lines
and will join more than 6,000 companies and 15 million consumers
relying on the technology to protect them from spammers
and phishers.
"Over the coming year, each business email
inbox will be hit with over 42,000 spam messages. Webroot's
goal is to filter spam and phishing attempts in the cloud
to keep company networks as clean as possible. We tested
several new reputation technologies and were impressed with
Mailshell LiveFeed's speed, accuracy and ease of use. With
their advanced statistical modeling techniques, Webroot
will continue to re-define 'enterprise-class'," said Mike
Irwin, COO of Webroot. "By delivering this substantial new
capability in our security software-as-a-service offering,
customers will immediately be able experience the advantages
of this capability without the costly and slow process of
upgrading appliances and on-premise software solutions."
E-mail spam can account for over 95 percent
of a company's daily e-mail traffic. Viruses transported
via spam are a top security concern for SMB and enterprise
technology decision makers. Managing these concerns translates
into a significant investment in time and money for IT departments.
Webroot E-mail Security SaaS alleviates these
concerns by utilizing a multi-layer approach to spam filtering
that includes careful attention to connection management
and integration of multiple best of breed filters to block
the maximum quantities of spam with the lowest possible
rate of false positives. In all, Webroot E-mail Security
SaaS catches 100 percent of all known viruses, provides
zero-hour protection against unknown viruses via advanced
heuristics and filters 98 percent of all spam. And, it delivers
this better level of security with better support and better
manageability.
In addition, the combined solution is the
first one specifically designed to quantify reputation via
advanced statistical models. Unlike other reputation services
that provide only a binary 'good' or 'bad' rating, Webroot
E-mail Security SaaS can now provide granular trust ratings
with automated adjustment over time as reputations change.
By focusing reputation on mathematical models, rather than
simply a 'black list' approach, language-agnostic detection
can be more accurate and highly scalable.
LiveFeed also helps Webroot E-mail Security
SaaS provide greater detection of spam bots by identifying
servers connecting to public mail servers against the IP
owner's terms of use. Additional anti-spam capabilities
include the tracking and updating of reputations in real-time
via data collected from spam traps, OEM partners uploading
anonymous data statistics from applications, a collaborative
end-user network, and data sharing partnerships.
"Webroot has demonstrated its commitment to
building and sourcing the best forms of protection for its
customers," said Tonny Yu, CEO of Mailshell. "Its use of
multiple, complementary techniques ensure its customers
are protected both from existing attacks as well as new,
unforeseen threats."
